YDI because, technically, you were tailgaiting. Like #25 said, one car distance for every 10 mph. Sixty mph? Six car lengths. FYL because it does suck when people slam on their breaks in front of cops. But, technically, you have to pay. You DID break the law.
If you were maintaining a proper distance for the speed of the road, no matter how hard the car in front of you slammed on their brakes you would not rear end them. YDI.
For some people out there 6+ car lengths is not always possible in some places, see crowded freeways. If the OP had a bigger car he should have hit her hard enough to total he car. You should never just slam on your brakes when you're going 60+ unless you have a very very good reason, a cop with a radar gun is not a very good reason.
@33 - I mean really, is that necessary? I'm sorry if I'd like to add a little something more to the conversation than "Lol, that sucks." I'm pretty sure you don't actually know me or anything about me to be making any implications about my intelligence, but either way I didn't ask for your critique, so thanks but no thanks. I'll be sure to think of you and whether or not you would approve every time I'm about to comment on another FML. Riiiight. Speaking of clever, it would be "FMLs" rather than "FML's" as there's really no reason FML should be made possessive in your post :-)
Two second rule is GOLDEN. Sorry, YDI. =X
High speeds with even two car spaces, wouldn't give you enough time to slam your brakes in that situation. OP probably had a car behind them as well so had to consider that fact. Besides, we don't know if the OP had ABS brakes! There's so many factors to consider like their reflex times etc. In any case, i hate drivers who almost brake to a halt when they see cameras. Note: they catch your speeds before you even reach the cops, so braking wouldn't really help you if you see them last minute. Idiots! Sorry OP
I hate people who drive crazy around cops.

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?
I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway
