Today, I was driving on the highway and a cop had his radar gun out. The woman in front of me panics and slams her brakes on, causing me to rear end her. The cop cited me for "tailgating" and I have to pay for the damages on both of our cars. FML

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?

I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway

Why am I not surprised a woman caused this accident. They shouldn't be driving in the first place.

YDI for tailgating. Sucks to be you though!

YDI. Judging by the fact that you rear-ended someone, you either: a. Were following too close to stop (the very definition of tailgating) or b. Are a terrible driver. or c. a and b #52: The OP might be a man, they don't mention their gender, only that of the person they rear-ended.

Who the hell follows 1 car length per 10 MPH rule?! Have you ever actually driven in a semi-large city or better yet the highways leading in and out of the city. I dare you to try driving 6-7 car lengths around NJ or NYC - not only will you be hated since you'd be congesting the traffic (see: stochastic system), but you also most likely would not be able to keep that distance since the space in front of you will continuously get filled up with drivers pissed at you forcing you to slow down further, creating more disturbances in the flow, etc...

Frankly, you do deserve that one. You were almost certainly following too closely. If you had been following the 2 second rule, this probably wouldn't have happened.

that's why you have to leave a big gap between cars on the freeway unless it's stop and go. what if something had fallen off a truck in front of her and she had to stop? you still would have hit her because you were following too close. YDI
