Regardless of why you were out in the rain, it was your fault because a landlord doesn't have the legal right to physically remove you from the residence unless there have been legal proceedings and, usually, an officer to escort you out. If you left on your own, well, sucks to be uninformed. As bad as that may be for a landlord who wants his property vacated, there are laws that prevent him from throwing you into the street.
