My boyfriend tells me this all the time, take it as a compliment. Seriously lady, you need to get any whimsical notions of romance out of your head. You're in a modern relationship: "love" and "compatibility" aren't relevant in the slightest. The important issues are what each person can get out of the other. Actually seriously though, I'm guessing if he buys you lots of things then he's pretty minted, and his reaction to what you said would indicate that he's been used for his cash in the past and the memory is still pretty raw. Making jokes in which you pick on somebody's biggest insecurity usually doesn't end well. You deserved it I'm afraid.
