Today, I was talking to a group of friends about the various problems in Africa. One of them interrupts me and asks with a straight face, "If it's so bad over there, why don't they all just leave?" FML

Well, emigration *has* repeatedly been a response over the centuries to all kinds of distress, including economic hardship. That's how the bulk of the USA's population got here, after all. The problem is one of scale. It doesn't work to do that with an entire continent of people. Emigration due to economic hardship is kind of interesting, really. You have to be badly enough off to want to leave everything and everyone you know behind, but you have to be well enough off to accumulate the surplus wealth for a plane ticket and to set yourself up in your destination country until you find gainful employment. And you can't be the victim of generations or centuries of systemized discrimination and oppression, either, to the point where it's extinguished all hope of ever helping yourself.

Your friend obviously doesn't understand the concept of limited resources.

Well they could move! To the country next door, which is probably just as impoverished/corrupt/war-torn/all of the above as the one they just left.

Umm... They were talking about Africa, and umm... How do I put this nicely? Umm... It's a continent hun! Not a country. :)

I believe you have mistaken Australia for Africa.

"My friend is a dumbass. FML" Your life must suck sooo much.

Hey Kayla you're pretty cute. We should text.

I can totally see him saying that. Except, with him, we all know he'd be saying it to be funny.
