Today, I went to the hospital due to vomiting and abdominal pain, and they decided to fit me with an IV drip. It took several tries by two different people to get the cannula in. I feel like a human pin-cushion. FML

To be honest, I'm not sure there are many people that do like needles...

As a nurse OP, we try to get it done as fast as we can. It sucks and sometimes we can't find a good vein to work with, but we aren't purposely trying to hurt you. Stay strong OP you can do it!

Cannula goes in your nose. Catheter goes in your arm for IVs.

a catheter is actually inserted into a urethra for assistance with urination.

The plastic tube that remains in your vein when the needle is removed is called a catheter. A urethral catheter is simply another type of catheter. Also, when we insert an IV, it can be referred to as "cannulating" the vein, so in a sense, that person was correct as well. A nasal cannula is what goes in your nose to deliver oxygen. A lot of medical terms can describe more than one thing

There is more than one kind of cath. Lots of interchangeable terms.

I have very hidden veins and it is usually problematic to get one in. They have threatened to use the vein in my breast before because it was the only one they could see.

They threatened to use a vein in your breast? Wow. It sounds as if they were blaming you for their inability to do their job.. How ridiculous honestly. Completely unnecessary. I wouldn't go back their if I didn't have to. Sorry to hear that. FYL and F OP's L.

Actually, sometimes breast veins are the best available. Not a punishment at all. Personally, I'd rather they use my breast, neck or foot (atypical places sometimes used for IVs) than have them stick my arms and hands multiple times without getting it in

The same thing happened to me when I was maybe 6 years old when I was getting a blood test. They gave me some old nurse who probably couldn't even see what she was doing and stabbed me 3 times before she went to get someone else. Sorry OP, I know it sucks.

To all the people voting YDI- why? How could OP deserve getting admitted to hospital or having veins that are hard to find?

I asked myself the same question and went scrolling through the comments to see if anyone had given some dumbass explanation as to why they voted YDI. It's amazing how no matter what the post is, there will always he a couple thousand people who vote YDI. Even though this one isn't quite there yet, I'm sure it will be soon enough. There are some stupid people on FML, I mean don't get me wrong, I can see someone trying to say "YDI cause you were probably dehydrated" but there is no proof to that. So even the only logical way to say YDI is stupid anyways.

I had an IV in my hand for a few days, and wound up getting a blood clot. When they tried to switch it over to my left hand, I screamed in pain so much that my boyfriend had to leave the room. Turns out I was so dehydrated that my veins had shrunk (that's a rough idea of what happened), and I wound up getting a clot in my left hand as well. The poor nurse felt so bad!
