Today, it was the last day of school. My students shared what they thought of me. Expecting to hear wonderful things, all of their complaints can be summed up in a few words: I'm a liar, a killer of dreams, I need to grow up, and I was a big disappointment to them. I'm a first-year teacher. FML

...Maybe over the summer you should consider changing a smidge.

Teachers like you are the reason society has gone backwards. No wonder teen suicide rates are going up, teens living on the streets doing drugs and alcohol, get high off paint and petrol and then start graffitiying everywhere. Yea you should be shot. Jks, that sucks OP, should have brought them all cookies and ice-cream on their last day! Suddenly you'll be their favorite teacher!

Well, I'm sure some of what they said was them just generally being horrible and trying to make you upset (small children may have the idea teachers are big bad adults who make rules and discipline them, regardless if they are a good teacher or not). I'm sure there are also some point you really need to think about. I think there are some criticisms that are true, you just didn't realise yourself. Maybe you sub-consciously put down students or raise your voice/shout more than is necessary. Be glad they were so honest with you and IMPROVE. Little things like saying you'll do something next lesson and then not doing it really can make kids loose respect for you (and make you a 'liar') or saying casually someone isn't good enough to be a doctor when they grow up, even if they are doing poorly at school, is a 'dream killer'. (I'm reading a book about teaching at the moment, I don't claim to know how to teach, just my opinion from what I've learn so far.) I remember I had a horrible teacher in year 3 (3rd grade in America?). She shouted and put students down constantly, I don't think she knew how much she actually did it. I remember one time she asked me to go to another class and give a teacher a note, I gave it them, they said okay and I went back, did what I was asked. Then she shouted at me for not getting the right information or whatever. Things like shouting at me for standing around and hugging my book (just walking along, clutching my book like kids do) and to 'engage my brain' if I got a question wrong... that sort of thing ever day. She damaged me a bit, even some years later *Sad face*. I imagine teaching isn't easy at all, but be strong, take things that are saidinto account, ignore blatant maliciousness, and maybe even revise some teaching 101.

Sorry for grammar mistakes, too late to change them now though!

oh, when I first read this FML, i thought OP meant that it was her first year as a teacher. It is more commonly said that she would be a first GRADE teacher where I live... (no trolling intended)

Uh, yeah. I'm 90% sure she IS saying it was her first year teaching. She's in Mississippi so what makes you think she's using the more European way to say first grade rather than meaning her first year? Horses man, not zebras.

Don't sweat it. listen to what they said, make tweaks, and try again next year.
