I was a teacher for 5 years. my first year or two didn't go so great, only because I thought I had to "control" the kids, and that their behaviors reflected badly on me (plus I took things personally). By my third year, I got it figured. Treat everyone with respect, spend your efforts on developing relationships outside the classroom (coaching, etc), and sarcasm is the best thing for those kids who "push" you constantly. Once you've "owned" them in front of class a time or two, they'll smarten up (and that doesn't mean dream-killing, mean spirited sarcasm. Just appropriate, calling it how it is sarcasm). this is all based on teaching grade 8-12.
Maybe teaching is not your calling. From what your students wrote to you, you should instead sign up to be an assassin?
Yeah you first year teachers don't know how to act
actually I have a first year teacher at my school and he has become my favorite teacher
nah, it's the spoiled brat kids who don't know how to act...suck it up... you are there to be taught by your teacher, not be friends with them
perhaps expecting wondrous reviews from a generation that hates knowledge was the problem
A generation that hates knowledge? Please. They only hate knowledge if they have been TAUGHT to hate knowledge, by a previous teacher who has killed their inquisitive nature, or by their current teacher for having a strict or impractical teaching style. I am a teacher... And I can tell you that I have had them hanging on to every word I say because they want to get started the activity and don't want any disruptions.
good for you :)
Hates knowledge? I'm an elementary librarian, and these kids are THRILLED to have access to all of these books. You wouldn't believe how many students beg me to let them check out more books than the number they're allowed. Oh, and non-fiction is my most popular section. I have to close the library a month before the school year ends (the school is closing down and I have to inventory and pack all of the books, by hand, as we don't have a computer system) and the kids are just crushed. "But, I wanted to read every book in here!" Do these sound like kids who hate knowledge?
^You're an idiot. When I was a kid, I read book after book after book from the time I was four. Fiction and non-fiction. My favorites were animal books, especially dinosaurs. I could tell you everything you wanted to know about dinosaurs. I read everything, though. I almost always had the discovery channel on in my room, but I did love cartoons so my time was split. When I moved to an elementary school with a library, I spent recess locked in there.. And lunch shoving food in my mouth to go play soccer and basketball. So no, kids who are raised right don't hate learning. Hell, even now I'm like that.. But with internet access ;) Lrn2Lrn =3 But seriously, generalizations make you look like an idiot.
year 2012... manual??? silly goose, upgrade system low cost. develop white paper, petition school. librarian not teacher...
you know I almost thought you were my ex at first, then I saw where the post came from, my suggestion is Lighten Up Francis
If you touch my stuff... I'll kill ya.
if they hate you that much, you're certainly doing something right. Keep up the good work.
annnnnd THAT is why most teachers quit in 5 years of teaching. if you can push past it congratulations you are a teacher. if not you shoul find a different job fast.
yes tenure is wonderful... real teacher after 5 years then never have to really teach but hold title. less than 5, only pretending? idiot.
I guess learn from it, but don't use "first year" as an excuse. i mean, come on, "liar"? "dream killer"? that came from somewhere. you don't have to be an asshole to kids to be an effective teacher; it starts with building mutual respect. my husband just finished his first year teaching high school and he was wonderful. nominated for teacher of the months 4 times by students (won once) and once for teacher of the year (lost though). and his students' test scores showed the second highest margin of improvement in the entire school. as one poster said, sarcasm and kind of calling out the kids who act shitty is the best way to handle it. poke fun at their immaturity and then ignore them and a lot of students will follow suit. I have to admit though, it helps immensely to be at a school where the administrators back you up and are strict and consistent with discipline.

...Maybe over the summer you should consider changing a smidge.
Teachers like you are the reason society has gone backwards. No wonder teen suicide rates are going up, teens living on the streets doing drugs and alcohol, get high off paint and petrol and then start graffitiying everywhere. Yea you should be shot. Jks, that sucks OP, should have brought them all cookies and ice-cream on their last day! Suddenly you'll be their favorite teacher!
