When little things get to someone that much it can be a sign something else is upsetting them. Try asking him how he's doing instead of being embarrassed by him.
I may be in the minority, but I don't blame you for being embarrassed. You should probably check if there are any underlying issues as to why he reacted that way though. Things probably happened and it could have built up to him just breaking down in this situation.
I think you should be less worried about the fact that the situation humiliated YOU and maybe focus on your sons mental health.
