Today, my 5-year-old decided that it would be a great idea to try to paint her nails in secret. As a result, I now get to learn how to remove copious amounts of dark nail polish from a wide variety of materials, including my apartment's 1/2-inch thick shag rug. FML

Fortunato_18 tells us more.

Just a couple of points I wanna touch on: 1) the shag rug: haha not my choice! It came with my apartment, where the rug is one of the least awful things about it. 2) I know I should have had the nail polish out of reach, but we were planning on painting my daughters nails as soon as one of us got the chance. She's never done anything like that before so I didn't think to lock it up. We did have a chat about it though, and it hasn't been an issue since (this happened a few weeks ago) 3)Thank you for the removal tips! Hopefully I can find one that works :)

Put the nail polish where she cannot get it.

you may not believe this but, when I spilled my red nail polish on my light gray carpet, I used Windex to clean it up and now you can't even see where the polish was spilled.

It happens, can't be mad at her. It's the independent phase, I remember doing that

children do this, u can't completely child proof every thing all the time.

No matter how much you child proof and keep an eye on them, they always find a way to cause havoc. Good luck op cleaning the mess. I hope one of the solutions you have come across work for you.

It's good that you've handled this situation well and that she's agreeing to it. You must have an amazing mother-daughter bond

I think she was giving you a hint to get wood floor.

I'm not gonna say YDI for keeping it in reach because kids are resourceful with this crap. Once when my mom was babysitting I put my nail polish on a bookcase and the kid apparently climbed onto the back of the couch, to a table thing, got my nail polish and painted everything. I did get yelled at for a good 30 minutes. So kids are cunning evil geniuses.

They are and that's why I don't have any. They are also not allowed in my home without 100% supervision.

I know where the new couch/lamp is going...

Steam clean and use really hot tap water. So hot that it is steaming. I know this works because grew up in the family business of carpet cleaning. Also got out red nail polish. If you can't do it yourself, you might want to hire a pro. Good luck, OP. :)
