Today, my 50-something coworker followed through on his threat to file a defamation lawsuit against me. All because I jokingly said "pedo" after he bragged to everyone that his girlfriend is a smoking hot 19-year-old. FML

Are you sure it came across as joking? I know we all make mistakes and it happens to all of us - things can just come out wrong and you don't realize it. Either way, that's a bit ridiculous as a course of action for him to take.

Pedo is an extremely loaded word that shouldn't be tossed around lightly as a joking insult, so I don't blame your coworker.

I'm assuming your co worker was never really a close friend in the first place, so it is strange/awkward on your part to just jokingly say "pedo". I could see why he would feel embarrassed, but there's really no need for him to respond like that.

I am probably gonna get downvoted, but YDI. I am married to a man 19 years older than me, I was 23 when we met (now 25) and I still hear that "pedophile" comment. It sucks.

I feel for ya, it has the joint insult of comparing you to a prepubescent child who can't make their own decisions and calling the man you love a criminal. Personally I think 19 is a lot different to 23, but even then 'pedo' is too strong, at the most it's worthy of a 'hey man what are you doing there you're 50'.

Never joke about someone being a pedo, could ruin someone's life if people thought it was the truth and it wasn't. Sounds like he is just a sad, older man trying to recapture his youth.
