Today, my aunt informed me that she thinks I'm faking the debilitating disease I've had for the past 13 years. Apparently she thinks I just don't want to go to college or get a job, and that I like living on disability. She also added that my entire extended family agrees with her. FML

What specific debilitating disease? Should have said the name. Then I could have googled it.

#06 - The OP said they suffer from a DISEASE, not a DISABILITY. There are numerous debilitating diseases out there that would prevent someone from going to work or school. It's very tactless of your aunt to have said something like that to you, particularly if you've been to the doctor. This situation is a hard FML, because it all depends on how the OP is acting... Still, FYL for having to deal with someone who can be so rude.

Hang in there and don't let them get to you. Maybe you could try telling them to mind off if they don't believe you? That might cause them to understand some of your pain a bit

#105 Forgive me if I'm mistaken but the OP hasn't been debating here, so that comment doesn't make any sense.

Oh god, what a bitch. If the extended family ever gets to disown you or something, tell them "good riddance!"

To be honest, not knowing the specifics of what you have (but I'm guessing it's a purely mental condition, given that you can't physically prove it to your family), a lot of "debilitating diseases" of the mental variety are misdiagnosed depression or other such things that are very easily treatable. I've known quite a few people who spent decades on disability, and it turned out they had something a small dose of prozac or a zoloft could fix. When they determine if you are eligible for disability, you are referred to a specific doctor who makes the recommendation for disability or not - half of the time, these doctors are in a mindset that you're disabled unless you can prove otherwise, because their entire job is based around disability recommendations. The other half of the time, they don't ask the questions to fully flesh out your lifestyle, they only ask ones pointed directly at disability. After awhile, you start convincing yourself you ARE disabled. You actually turn your depression into a real disability because rather than getting the treatment for depression that you needed, you were convinced to turn your depression into a lifestyle and a habit. After nearly 15 years of it, it's absolutely true that you are disabled now, because now your brain doesn't even know how to function in any other way - but maybe you weren't to start off with.

i cant believe how judgemental u people are!! its not as if anyone enjoys being on disability and not having an active life and seriously its not as if these people are raking in the money, goverment checks are probably barely enough to get by on...so theor not living a lavish lifestyle by any means for those who dont know anything about depression just keep ur mouth shut...because all ur doing is showing the world how ignorant u really are!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was reading alot of these comments and I'm a little surprised things have gotten so out of hand. First of all, they haven't said ANYTHING about being DISABLED, only that it is debilitating. This means a loss of strength, weakness which means that in actual fact they probably can't get a job or go to college etc. If people decide to believe the OP that the don't like being like this then maybe people shouldn't be so judgmental. Suddenly someone mentions depression and it's all up in the air with people arguing over complete rubbish. (I may as well jump on the band wagon) Perhaps if someone grabs a psychology book they might learn a few things, just because it is considered a mental illness doesn't mean that it doesn't come from a biological defect. It's like someone saying they have a migraine and someone having a cast. Who would you believe more? Sometimes you have to take someone's word for it. This totally sucks. FYL.

Jesus, can't people stop beign so...untrusting? Maybe, you're actually less forunate! Maybe she should stop thinking everyone in her family is superior and a an asshole. At least it's just your extended family. It's just them that's cocky and jerkoffs. Not your immediate family. Time to call in a hitman!
