A lot of times, when people come out to their best friends, the reaction is for the friend to reevaluate their entire friendship with the person, worrying that it was based on attraction and not friendship. That's gotta be humiliating for the gay friend. I imagine she was just trying to correct that assumption, albeit awkwardly.
