No matter how rude the joke was, it was unacceptable for the grandma to react by physically assaulting him. He's absolutely right to be pressing charges.
A vase? Really? I know elderly outrage gets out of control, but honestly...
They were both in the wrong. Your boyfriend needs to learn that when it comes to making inappropriate jokes, whether it was sexual, religious, racial, or in any other means that could be offensive to some people, there's a time and a place for it. However, there's no excuse for your grandmother to have to resort to physical violence. That will only backfire against her and he has every right to press charges considering that smashing something hard like a vase over his head could have potentially given him a concussion. She needs to learn that there is more power in words than there is in an action.
Regardless of how crazy the action she took was; you always take your grandmothers side. Your boyfriend should have never been rude in the first place. And besides; if you are having a hard time deciding whose side to take in the first place, you deserve it.
Well what was the joke?
Take grandmas. Dodge the bullet now. If your boyfriend is going to be that rude to your family he isn't worth losing your family over
you're grandma, she wouldn't of hit him over the head if he wasn't acting disrespectful in the first place.
Not sure who was more rude here I mean a joke or a vase to the head not sure which I'd like more
A joke can be brushed off, a vase over the head is assault

The problem is not the problem. The problem is your grandmas reaction to the problem. That's the problem.
Well, your boyfriend seems like an asshole for wanting to press charges, however granny didn't need to hit him over the head with a vase. Perhaps everyone can sit down and settle things like adults? Hopefully this will teach your boyfriend to keep his rude jokes to himself!
