Nothing justifies violence unless it is violence. If your boyfriend is injured, he should press charges.
So what's the Joke?
Honestly, they're both in the wrong here. He shouldn't have made a rude joke to your grandmother, and she shouldn't have reacted to words with violence. I'd be mad at both of them, but if it comes down to choosing this guy or your family, stick with your family. The fact that he thought it was appropriate to speak to your grandmother that way is a red flag.
Your grandma's of course ! You have to secure your inheritance. But in all seriousness , it was not cool for your bf to be rude to your grandmother and although she was way out of line he deserved to be hit in the head by a vase.
Maybe he'll think twice before he disrespects one of your family members again.
You WOULD NOT be saying that if the person who was hit in the head by a vase was a female.
Why are you conflicted? I'd choose my grandmother, if your boyfriend truly cared for you he wouldn't have said offensive things to your family.
Your grandma's of course! Blood is thicker than water!
"the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" in its original context that saying is against siding with family and more for siding with others whom you have made a commitment.
If the joke was less than 1 Aristocrat*, then the boyfriend. If it was over 1 Aristocrat, then the grandmother. * An Aristocrat being a unit for the offensiveness of the joke. To count as unoffensive a joke must be at 1 deciAristocrat or less.
Why would your boyfriend tell a rude joke to your grandmother?

The problem is not the problem. The problem is your grandmas reaction to the problem. That's the problem.
Well, your boyfriend seems like an asshole for wanting to press charges, however granny didn't need to hit him over the head with a vase. Perhaps everyone can sit down and settle things like adults? Hopefully this will teach your boyfriend to keep his rude jokes to himself!
