While he did deserve to be HIT for the joke, I don't agree with a vase.. My suggestion is stay neutral. You'd be in a lot less shit then you would if you picked a side.
Your grandma is a badass
You take your grandmas side. Your boyfriend should not have told such a joke in the presence of your grandmother. And he deserved to get clocked with the vase.
Would you say that if the roles were reversed? If a girlfriend had been clobbered with a vase, instead of a boyfriend?
I know! How are we supposed to decide who is in the wrong without hearing the joke?
The blatant sexism on this thread is vile. Everyone would be crying foul if the genders were reversed, and the encouragement by many of abuse against men is sickening. Fact of the matter is that a ******* joke does not - I repeat, DOES NOT - warrant a potentially deadly assault. I'd press charges, as well. No judge would side with the grandmother in this situation, unless the judge was mentally deficient.
Or the grandmother is.
Maybe it's because I don't get on with my grandparents, but I'd side with boyfriend. That is such an out-of-proportion reaction to the situation and it sucks you're stuck inbetween two incredibly immature people. FYL.
I can't believe how many people are siding with Granny...
Why? It's about respect. He should have enough respect to not tell rude jokes to his elders. Yes, the vase may be excessive but I bet he'll think twice before telling a rude joke to his elders again. Would you feel different if it read that the grandmother had hit him with her cane? (If she had one)
Violence is still an inappropriate response. Assault is never wise or legal regardless of provocation, and a dirty joke ranks pretty low on the provocation list. She could have caused very serious damage. Her sensibilities will recover faster than gashes and a concussion.
family comes first
Both need to come to a mutual agreement and stay far away from each other till they're okay

The problem is not the problem. The problem is your grandmas reaction to the problem. That's the problem.
Well, your boyfriend seems like an asshole for wanting to press charges, however granny didn't need to hit him over the head with a vase. Perhaps everyone can sit down and settle things like adults? Hopefully this will teach your boyfriend to keep his rude jokes to himself!
