Today, my dad took my phone away. This would be fine if I was 14. I'm 22 and pay for all of my own bills. FML

Then why are you allowing your dad to do this?

My mom tried to pull that one on me, so I left.

No, if its your paying for something then your parents have no right to take it.

So... If you bought something with your own money, and your parents took it, you would say "ok, I don't object"?!?

Like it was pointed out earlier. There isn't enough info here. For all we know OP thinks she pays for all the bills, and could only be buying junk food and gas, for her vehicle. You see it all the time now.

In any case, the fact that they are or are not paying their bills doesn't entitle their parents to taking their stuff at random. They are both adults. If dad doesn't appreciate his kid freeriding, he can kick her out.

i wonder what was in your phone which caused such great interest? ;)

why not pay for his bills too? thatd solve all problems

Some parents have a hard time giving up control over their children, no matter what their age. Even if the OP is still living under her dad's house, 22 is a little too old to be grounded in such a way. FYL

I'm almost twenty one and I still get grounded like that. ( Because of a roommate putting my credit in the hole I had to move back home.) My parents threatened to take my car once before if I didn't find a job which makes no sense to do. & my phone which, they're never home, we have no house phone, & live 30 miles out in the country so taking my only way to communicate would be a really dumb mistake. But my point is, if you don't have any way to move out you have to deal with it. No matter what they do, no matter how stupid, it's okay for them to do because you're under their roof. :/

You don't think you're too grown to be grounded that way? I understand it's their house/their rules and completely understand you respecting that, even "dealing" with it but you saying it's okay for them to do it despite it being stupid? That is where it's confusing me.

Oh I do. But If I disagree I'll probably be kicked out on the street. I almost have before so I figure just listen until I can get my credit back up & get money again to find a place & leave. It's harder to do when you're tied down by a baby though. Lol

FYL for letting him pull that sh*t you pay your own bills you control that phone....pay some rent too

If you don't like it you can always leave.

Yeah... if my parents tried this I would just leave. And then get one of those pay-as-you-go phones. Some parents really need to learn when to cut the umbilical cord.

God I hope you were Sexting and accidently sent it to him. Also if you said "Like OMG" and "Totally" in a sentance within 5-10 seconds of each other then you definitely deserve it.

My mom would take away my laptop even though I paid it myself. I'm Asian so I'm culturally obligated to obey her.

I'm sorry but if I were asian I still wouldn't. I know someone with "strict Asian parents" as well and, though I somewhat see why she can't do things as she's 16, you, if you're old enough to pay for your own shit, should grow a damn backbone!! **** cultural restrictions! They are honestly just hyped up rules and (to pull out a cliche) are meant to be broken :) especially if they only repress you!

"**** cultural restrictions" is a very easy thing to say about someone else's culture. Not so easy to do when you're born, raised, and forever immersed in that culture.

Lmao, this doesn't make sense. I thought we needed our technology, for our games and math. We could die brother!
