burn his ******* house down and say the same thing.
This. So much this. Or do something equally destructive to something valuable of theirs. Even if he's an alcoholic, that still doesn't excuse him for showing no respect towards other people's property. It may be a dick move on the OP's part to retaliate in such a way, but it'll be a rude wake up call to those assholes that enable such asinine behaviour by excusing his actions just because he's drunk.
Who the **** pays 600$ for a phone!? My last computer cost 300 and I bet it has more kick than that "phone" Ok it doesn't have that much of portability but who would really want to watch movies from 3" screen when the alternative is 75"? Or is the music from ear plugs really that much greater compared to 50 $ device (Yup we can buy cheap multimedia phones here in Europe...)? Oh the 3G - U really cannot wait for updating your myspace or facebook status..., just get some real life...
I guaran-damn-tee you that this FML wouldn't exist if the OP owned a more reasonably priced phone. It would be more like "Today, my drunk uncle dropped my phone in the pool, so I got on the AT&T website and got the free upgrade I was due anyway. MLIA"
Re pressing charges or suing wouldn't advise either... it's not very practical in a family setting, and leads to ill-feeling. Destruction of his property will make you look childish. Also from experience, I know how difficult to get get drunks to understand that their right to get drunk and "have a good time" does not trump other's rights to have their stuff left intact. I would simply take something you want of his of equal value and keep it. If he or anybody else notices just say "Well, he destroyed my phone" and refuse to give it back assuming you can enforce this.
Bottom line- they are your family. Yeah, this decision to support the drunken antics of your uncle sucks, but I mean, I'm guessing you have known them long enough to know that this is exactly how they react to these situations. I don't think you should be surprised. As for the phone, aren't there insurance packages that cover water damage? I mean, if you are going to unload 600 bucks for the phone, why not unload the cost to pay for the ultra good insurance too? I still say, though, FYL.

Get drunk and drive his car into the lake. Problem solved, after all you can't take responsibility for your drunken actions.
Gah.. your family sucks
