Make her pay for it

While the teacher had a right to confiscate the phone because it was being used during class time, because she took the phone she as an agent for the school became responsible for it and as such the school is liable for any damages while it was in their care. A smarter educator knowing the nature & fragility of these new devices would have instructed the student to power down & put away their phone or had the student bring it to them instead.
