Today, my mother and grandmother informed me that my sixteen-year-old dog died. I was standing in Wal-Mart at the time. They then yelled at me because crying in public is "inappropriate." FML

I'm sorry about your dog...crying in public is perfectly alright; there are people who do it on a regular basis, for goodness sake. You just lost one of your best friends, I mean, c'mon. :( That's some insensitive family you have...sorry, OP. Perhaps you could get a puppy to fill the void a bit, after a little while? :D

sounds like my family.. I'm sorry OP. I know it sucks :/

Everybody knows they're (most likely) going to outlive most pets, but that doesn't make a pet's death hurt any less.

They both need to pick their battles... It's a natural reaction to cry when finding out an older pet died. I'm very sorry about the loss of your canine-comrade. :/

Crying in public is inappropriate, but crying in Wal*Mart is OK, because anything goes there. In a normal place, it would be disgraceful to pretend you are handicapped to get benefits that are reserved for the truly disabled. In Wal*Mart, able-bodied people are whipping around the store in electric carts like it's a demolition derby. Why? Because it's Wal*Mart -- you don't see a PeopleOfTarget.com, do ya? PS: Sorry about your dog. Take comfort that you gave him or her a good long life.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. Stay strong and just know that they are in a better place. Read the poem the rainbow bridge, it helped when my dog passed.

Hmm...weird. Because, crying whilst inside Walmart is completely appropriate.

I'm sorry. Losing a pet isn't easy. It's ok to cry. That was an inappropriate time to tell you anyways.

And yelling at someone in public is so much more appropriate. Sorry for your loss, OP. That dog must have been a part of your family for most of your life. I swear, some people just don't deserve to be parents.
