By liberatedwoman - 11/08/2009 14:57 - Oman

Today, my mother sat me down to tell me that since coming home from college, I sounded like "a liberated woman." She was disappointed and disturbed by this, and said that I should stop having strong opinions and ideals because it would make finding a husband for me difficult. FML

Tell your mom to shut the **** up and that this isn't the 1950's.

Don't stop being "a liberated woman" everyone should use their brains and being willing to speak in a peaceful manor and have discussions on issues. Besides I would rather date a woman that can tell me that I am wrong and then we can discuss why I am wrong and find common ground. Keep it up, your doing the right thing.

hell that sounds fine to me. I am tired of getting smacked around from my "liberated" woman.

Tell your mom that because of Lincoln she has to clean my house.....

Dear commenters, Finally, the OP is here to speak up. I would like to clarify a few things about my post. First, I'm really sorry that this has been misinterpreted as a commentary on the state of affairs in Oman. It is not. Oman is a wonderful country that is consistent with "hir23"'s claims. NEITHER IS MY FAMILY MUSLIM. I thus do not feel like it is my place to comment on the state of muslim women in Oman, but from what I can tell, they seem happy and free. So to reiterate: Not Muslim, Not Omani. I just happen to live there. Yet, my culture is pretty archaic and places undue value on conformity.

WTF is a liberated women doing on fml?

Also, as the OP I would like to apologize to the muslim/arab community on behalf of people who clearly don't know what they're talking about. I have lived in an arab country for years and have deep respect for your people.

@#134 and others, However, the types of opinions and ideals I talked to my mother about had to do with freedom to choose your own way of life. One that might be contrary to the cultural norm of getting married young and having children.

Gah. I'm a Vietnamese woman going to college in the US, and these days when I'm home in Vietnam, EVERYONE tells me not to get a Ph.D. because it'll make it hard for me to get a husband. I have so many sardonic responses to that, I don't even know which one to start with.

WTF, you didn't even get what I was saying. I am very much pro-choice and am GLAD we have abortion, not that that has anything to do with my comment. It seems like you just wanted to bring up abortion to instigate more debate here. Regardless, did my comment go totally over your head, or just partially? From the looks of your response, I'm guessing totally. "Sweety." ;D
