Today, my mother won't let me intern at a prestigious college, working with graduate students and professors, and being paid, because she doesn't want to drive me. FML

Great opportunity to get your license perhaps?

Is there no other way to get there? Perhaps a bus, or bike, if not too far? There has to be a way no?

If you're smart enough to be accepted as an intern in a prestigious college, you're smart enough to figure out alternative solutions on how to get there and back home

Uber? Or a public transit shuttle? Maybe talk with the person offering the opportunity and see if there is anyone who goes there who lives near you that you could carpool with.

I know it's hard to get across the whole story in so few characters, but I can't really fault your mother for not wanting to commit to being your daily taxi service. I never expected that sort of thing from my parents, at most they'd drop me off at my bus stop on their way to work.

Though I agree with you, it sounds like OP's mother doesn't want to help at all.

Sounds like a great opportunity. Maybe try and convince her, offer to pay for gas or her parking there?

It all depends on how far away it is... Of course she would not want to drive an hour every day

I don't really see how it's your mothers duty to get you to your internship. Rent a place closeby if there's no way for you to get there from where you currently live.

Why should she? The minute I turned 16 my parents stopped driving my pretty much everywhere

If this is what you really want then fight for it, find a way to sort it out. You will regret it if you let it slip away this easily.

Sounds like a great opportunity. But this is part of growing up, being able to do things on your own. Actually I'm a bit surprised you don't have a car already. Being from the wester part of the U.S. I know cars are a big part of life there. Get a cheap car and learn to work on it. One more step to being more self sufficient.

Take a bus? A cab? Train? Bike? Rent somewhere close by? Have you really exhausted all of your options here?
