Today, my sister and I heard back from a job we both applied to. I had used the knowledge from my MBA degree to write a six-page essay for the application, while she just copied and pasted hers from a random website. Guess who got the job. FML

You're better off not working in a place like that if they don't appreciate real effort and hard work anyway. Hope you find a job, OP.

I hate to break it to you, it was clearly your own fault. Don't hate your sister for that because she clearly was outsmaring you and deserved it more. Writing an essay, not to mention a six(!!!!!) page essay, for a job application does get you nowhere. Make yourself interesting.

Before you judge, some companies actually require you to write an essay about yourself. So this might not be op's fault.

They'd rather hire a lazy person because they will get a project done the quickest. Not the most efficient.

Don't take me wrong OP, but nowadays a six page CV essay means you are unable to express yourself properly. Companies are looking for people that will do as much work as possible in as little time as possible. You need to show that you are able to get to the point quickly and effectively. Plus, by adjusting a standard CV form your sister also shows that she is aware of current standards and is able and capable to work with already existing "materials" instead of doing everything from scratches. While working in HR we had several stages of sorting out CVs that were arriving. Preliminary sorting was in two piles: standard CV forms (like those that you sister copy/pasted) and "everything else". Our manager never ever bothered to look the second pile. Now, I don't know what were the requests of the employer for the job from application, and I am aware that sometimes standard CVs are showing lack of interest, but usually, if not otherwise specified, standard form is needed.

I really don't agree with this. Our HR department looks for people who will think about what they are doing and do it in the best way possible. Just copy/pasting something from the internet shows that sister will choose the quick and easy way out, not something you want to see in your workforce.

That's the American job market these days. Best of luck finding a job OP.

I have found that people with MBA's usually have this idea that whatever they're taught is what is needed and tries to be fancy/over complicated with their approach. K.I.S.S

So many thoughts are flowing through my head with this work smart not hard, she did you didn't know your audience she did you didn't street smart (her) book stupid (you) overqualified (you) versus qualified (her) Clear and concise beats pompous and verbose every time From a management point of view the companies investment in her was a better fit for them in the long run because the likelihood is she would be staying there and they could benefit from her long-term where with you it was likely a temporary job which would require them to do this all over again when you left for your professional career

I am sensing a theme in our communications

6 pages are way longer than the average attention span. If TV ads have taught us anything its that if you can't sell it in under a minute no one is going to buy it.

Why would you and your sister both apply to the same job. Sounds like you were just asking for trouble on that one.

In my case, I found out about the job, and my sister decided she wanted to make money (though she doesn't need to), and applied at the same place, rather than looking for a job opening on her own.

tl:dr. keep it short and sweet. they don't have time to read all that.
