Today, my smoke alarm went off. In a frenzy, I called 9-1-1 and exited my house. Several minutes later a fire truck showed up. After investigating, one of the firemen informed me I needed to change the batteries in my smoke alarm. FML

...Talk about an extreme reaction to a smoke alarm. You definitely deserved that one. Next time check and see what the hell is going on first. Most times it's just the alarm being stupid, which doesn't mean you have to be, too.

You know how busy the fire department would be if someone called 911 every time this happened? You deserved it for wasting their time.

Today, as I was opening my front door after a long day of work, my alarm went off. In a frenzy, I dialed 9-1-1. The police arrived, and an officer told me I have to deactivate my alarm when I get home. FML.

"hay my smoke alarm is going off I think I'll go running over to it to investagate" ya that's a real good idea

I hope for the sake of humanity that this is a fake. Who the heck doesn't check if there's actually a fire before ringing the fire brigade? You may just be the dumbest person on Earth.

Although this is indeed very stupid, I've seen dumber people on the internet. Sad but true :(

Typically, the sound of it going off because of a fire should be different from when you need to change the batteries. The smoke alarm should sound more like an alarm clock, while a signal to change the batteries should be a longer beep with longer pauses between them. I don't know, just a guess.

I thought that generally a smoke detector periodically emits a single "chirp" when the battery is low, but will start making a sound like an alarm clock when it actually detects smoke.

Please check your general area for smoke/fire before overreacting if you have a self smoke alarm. Another guy broke his leg jumping out of his bedroom window with a false alarm. (Obvious you can't check the whole building for fire when you live in a dorm.)

Since when do smoke detectors "go off" when the batteries are low? In my house some of the detectors are ancient and some are new, but all of them just chirp every minute or two when the batteries are low. YDI for not even sniffing the air for smoke, and you REALLY deserve it if you can't tell the difference between a low battery chirp and a full out alarm.
