Today, six years after hurricane Katrina took everything from me, I received a letter in the mail from FEMA telling me that I have to repay them the money I received to replace what was lost. I have 30 days to repay $4,900 or the case will be sent into federal debt collection. FML

The government should know all about going in to debt.

Okay, we all know FEMA is mismanaged...but how dumb do you have to be to not realize the money was a LOAN?! FEMA provides emergency loans, not free cash. You got the money for 6 years with an extremely low interest rate--you should be thankful. And hopefully now you're smart enough to pay for insurance. (Btw, I lost ALL my belongings in a fire and didn't get a penny from anyone. I know it sucks but I got over it and didn't try to mooch off the government.)

Seriously? Live below sea level and your surprised it flooded? Always read the fine print on anything and everything you sign. You got a loan of some sort. It's not the government's fault you didn't have some sort of insurance to cover your ass. No one MADE you take the money.

I know the national news made it seem like Katrina hit New Orleans, but it didn't. New Orleans got a gentle sideswipe from the western bands of the storm. The actual hurricane, including its most powerful parts, hit the Mississippi coast (and of course Alabama and the rest of Louisiana were impacted as well.) Virtually no one here is below sea level, but the storm surge pushed nearly 30 feet of water onshore. So if you lived up to 25 feet above sea level, near any body of water, you were screwed. My work is nearly 6 miles inland and at least 15 feet above seal level, but they got 10 feet of water inside. Get off your high horse.

Did you keep your money in the bank or in your walls?

Do people really feel sorry for OP? For those who don't realize this ... 1) the money was a LOAN which OP has known (or should have known!) for six years he was going to have to pay back, and 2) the money didn't grow on a tree, it is YOUR tax dollars. Everyone should have homeowner's or renter's insurance. Seriously a minimum policy is like $10 a month, there is no excuse for not having it. If you live in a floodplane you should also have flood insurance. The fact that OP's possessions were not covered by insurance is 100% OP's fault. It's not my job or your job to pay for his ruined DVDs with our hard earned tax dollars. I have no sympathy.

Fight back. I believe that you'd easily win if you were never told that it was a loan.

Wtf, doesn't that defeat the purpose of government aid? Fyl, OP. Sorry. :(
