Today, six years after hurricane Katrina took everything from me, I received a letter in the mail from FEMA telling me that I have to repay them the money I received to replace what was lost. I have 30 days to repay $4,900 or the case will be sent into federal debt collection. FML

The government should know all about going in to debt.

This happened to me. Gave the letter to an attorney, and I was told he made it go away :) don't fall for it!

And the attorney will want a chunk of money.

What do you people expect? Doesn't matter that OP lost everything, he/she still has to repay the money that's due. I'm sorry for OP's circumstances; I understand, it sucks and he/she never deserved it, but that's life. No government in the entirety of the world just "gives" you money. You either pay it through taxes, military service, etc.

Nothing is free. And call me crazy, but people who live below sea level should maintain the levies that hold the water back.

The Army Corps of Engineers are suppose to maintain the levies.

Those bastards. I'm so sorry for what you've gone through. my thoughts and prayers are with you. May those assholes rot in karma hell!

Karma is a 'what goes around, comes around' the government lent them money in their time of need, and now the government needs it back.

let them do it it's just a threat I lived in my old house and didn't pay 2 years of rent and I was fine they are just trying to scare you

Um...is that even legal? If it is, that's what's wrong with this country. Plus, people are so in debt and can't find work that it's only getting worse.
