YDI for being a crappy teacher then. At my school, even the hardass teachers get respected if they're good teachers. I know one teacher who was a sniper in the military in Vietnam. He's a complete bastard and everyone hates the work he gives out, but when it comes down to it, we still respect him because he has so much experience and so many lessons to share. So either you don't understand kids or you're mean when you don't have the right to be. Either way, you must be a pretty terrible teacher.

You should really do some self-assessment there. Usually, students will at least clap out of politeness, even if they don't love the teacher. Most students also appreciate hard-ass teachers, too, because we know that they're necessary, and teach us lessons. You must be a real ass if they didn't clap AT ALL. Either that or you're dumb and don't teach them anything, or a combination of several things. Do some soul-searching, and if you don't find anything wrong with yourself (that's indicative of some deep-rooted emotional issues, by the way), get a new job.
