Hey guys! Just thought I'd explain since I couldn't fit the whole story into the FML. The woman had come into the restaurant about three months ago with two other ladies. I hadn't been up front at first and she was initially talking to another hostess. The first host tried to sit her at a table, at which point the woman said she wanted a booth. I joined the conversation at this point and stated we had a booth in Ryan's section. The woman exclaimed "Oh! Ryan!" She seemed excited so I said, "Yes, do you like Ryan? I can give you one of his tables." The woman said "Oh no, I have no idea who Ryan is. I've never been here before." I said "Oh, okay then. I'll sit you with Robert. Wait no, Robert just got a table. Let's go to Rachel." I took her to the table, asked if it was alright and she said it was fine. Thinking everything was okay I left. Halfway through her meal I see my manager at the table apologizing profusely. Once he left he asked me what the hell I did to the woman. Apparently she told her server that I tried to seat her at a table, refused to let her sit with Ryan and Robert, and forced her to sit here. She called me a twit, told her server she felt bad because Ryan and Robert were missing out on the huge tip she was going to give them, and that I don't know how to do my job. Since that day she has written to corporate saying that I am condescending, speak to my co-workers inappropriately, and need to be retrained. Yesterday was the first time she actually got in my face about it, and I was so stunned all I could say was "I'm sorry." I'm not trying to make myself out to be the model employee but this lady seems to have a personal vendetta against me. My managers have been understanding about it and I'm just hoping that with time she'll stop harassing me!

it's funny how people think that that'll work! don't worry the more she calls the less they'll take her seriously
who the hell is she to remove you from your job? and yes Op you surely have lots of patience

Your managers have?
That's horrible. She's literally harassing you for no reason. Weird. I'm glad your managers are understanding. If I were them I would be tempted to ban her from the restaurant. Treating someone like that and harassing them is not ok and customer or not, someone that harasses someone else shouldn't be allowed to go to their place of work just to freak on them. Crazy lady.
Seriously, that part doesn't make any sense to me either.
I didn't give her to Ryan because he was just sat less than five minutes ago and didn't have drinks to the table yet. It would have stressed him out. Rachel hadn't been sat in over 15 minutes and was ready for another table so she was the logical choice. Since the woman didn't request Ryan and said Rachel's booth was fine I didn't think anything of it.
Yep..... I respect your ability to remain calm in said situation, because you seem very nice and sweet and the exact opposite of condescending, which is how I probably would have acted towards her after the close of the first incident! Kudos to you Op!
That sounds like the sort of customer that needs to be thrown out and banned from ever coming back. Harrassment and assholism is NOT cool.
Could it maybe have been your tone of voice? I'm just asking because, although the wrong tone of voice still does not warrant the kind of relentless harassment she's smothering you with, I can see why someone would get SLIGHTLY upset by someone using a wrong tone of voice and coming off as rude. Otherwise, I can find nothing wrong with what you did and that makes it hard to wrap my mind around why someone would be so vicious under the circumstances.
WOW! I know the customer is King and all, but daaamn. If ahe is still doing it over and over again involving corporate then het a formal letter feom your superiors and next time she comes to the restaurant wait till she leaves shove it in her face and tell her your goi g to sue her for harassing you if she does not stop. I'm sure the security camera can help as well. Don't worry, they usually just fedl in power and love to show off in front of their friends.
While I can not speak from the guest's perspective, I personally do not believe it was my tone of voice. My "hosting voice" is usually an octave higher than my relaxed, every day voice. I also have a day job working with adults with developmental disabilities and am currently going to school for my Ph. D in Psychology, so I have been trained extensively on appearing calm and approachable to others.
I've got to say that really sucks op! I think that everyone needs to work customer service atleast once in their life so they can learn how to deal with assholes when you can't do anything about it, and hopefully teach people that where they sit isn't as important as they may think. also am I the only one who noticed that all the other staff's names start with an R? I just found that mildy amussing.
You're not the only one who noticed that! I had to laugh when I realized the three "R"'s in the story; still, fyl, op. I hope things get better.. :/ it's not easy being in a customer service job; though from the sound of it, you seem to be doing well handling it, which is more than many of us can say. (Continue to) keep your head up :)
Wow! As a former hostess I sympathize with your situation. IMO, you did everything right. I kinda feel sorry for the woman because she clearly has some issues. Those of us that have worked in the restaurant industry and/or any customer service job have all had that one asshole customer that you will always remember. Back when I worked as a rep for a soda company, our distribution center was completely destroyed in the Joplin, Missouri tornado tragedy. I got the one customer the next day that didn't seem to understand that we not only had no way of placing his soda order for his restaurant, but no way of submitting said order, no distribution center to receive the order, no staff to receive said order and ship it, no product to ship because an F5 tornado scattered it all over the state of Missouri, no trucks to deliver the order, or drivers to drive the destroyed trucks. That guy lost his mind. He made it his mission in life to get me fired. After he cussed out my manager and then his manager got on the line and after a few minutes of calmly trying to explain that we were doing everything in our power to get product, trucks, and drivers in from surrounding states, apparently it still wasn't enough. So they told him that we didn't want or need a customer like that. So, good for you for handling it like a pro and I'm glad you've got supportive bosses.
Wow. What the hell is her problem? She sounds crazy. Your managers do have the right to tell her not to come back
I know how you feel. I worked at KFC as a fry cook... this woman walks in and starts yelling at me about how her order is always wrong every time she comes in.My first thought is, if it's always wrong, why do you keep coming here? Instead of asking, I directed her to the people who work the register who directed her to the manager. Some people are just nuts... And she started yelling at me just because I was wearing a KFC uniform... no other reason.
Honestly, some people just can not be won over. You seem very friendly and like you know how to do your job. But I think she took advantage of the fact that you were indecisive on where to seat her. It made her wonder why you didn't want to place her in the seats you originally offered. Even though you made the decision to aid your coworkers, the customer doesn't always understand that. Unfortunately, she doesn't. The only thing I can recommend is to have told her that Rachel was the best waitress you had and that she would love her. It would've made her feel like your priority was for her to enjoy her time there.
Had a big tip for Ryan and Robert? I think she wanted to be where the boys were..
Story of my life, OP. I'm a host as well. This job has made me lose faith in humanity
Being a barista will do that too. People suck.
That's ANY customer service job.
Touché.
Never let a customer get in your face or personal space. Never. Walk away and get the manager. It's their job to handle twats like that.
A when I worked at a food establishment, there wasn't a manager present 85% of the time. If there was an unhappy customer, we had to resolve the situation ourselves. It sucked but taught us how to handle those kinds of customers and how to remain calm in shitty situations like that.
Because the mobile version of FML is super buggy right now, this comment is just to push OP's comment up so I can read the entire thing. (Please fix this, and make the x for the ads bigger. I can't ever seem to hit it and it's really annoying that it keeps bringing up the App Store rather than letting me get on with my business of FMLing :/ )
I had the problem with the ads too. Try hitting the back button. It works for me on my Galaxy S4.
That's really unfortunate but thank you for the update! I work retail I know how it goes. keep you're head up and do your best! you're worth it!!
Oh man i had to kick a old lady out of out restaurant she ordered scrod every time and would complain about it.
