Your future, our clutter

By pwib - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States - Napa

Today, a bunch of my friends have been accepted to various colleges while I've been denied by the past 5. To cheer me up, my mom drove me to McDonald's. While we were in the drive-thru, she asked them if they had any job openings. FML

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Hey, don't worry. Maybe you'll get burned by the oil from the chips and then have a life-changing enlightenment, which will push you to get into Harvard and become a billionaire. Then again... Maybe not.

Your mom is right, Op. It sounds like to me that you are crushed that you won't get the "university" lifestyle that comes with college acceptace like that. If you really want to succeed then you are going to have to start now. Apply for a job over the summer, get into a community college come fall and just figure out what you want to do. You'll meet great people.

looks like a bright future for you OP

Here is the life lesson you (should have) just learned: **** up in high school and spend the rest of your life flipping burgers. It's your own damn fault. Your mom has the right idea.

Not true. Having a college degree won't really do you a thing in this economy. I was next in line after the salutatorian in HS, and recently graduated magna cum laude from a good college with a 3.8 GPA. The unemployment rate for my graduating class is over 60%: those of us lucky enough to have jobs are currently working retail or fast food for minimum wage. And we don't have much choice because we owe thousands in student loans.

There's nothing wrong with working there, it's just that some people don't want to, but find they cannot get a job elsewhere.

So... you either didn't work hard enough in school OR you applied to schools that weren't in your range. There was a girl like that in my class. She was smart and got good grades, but she thought she was going to get into Ivy league colleges with just nice grades and a slightly higher than average SAT. Imagine her surprise....

Yes, thank you BloodFaerie. This is precisely what I was thinking. There is also community college, where the OP could get a start if he or she really wants to go to college but didn't have the grades or SAT score to get into a four-year school right out of the gate. You can always do a year or two there, get your grades up and then re-apply to the other schools. One of my colleagues did that and it did not hurt her; she went on to a master's degree and is doing very well in her field. She just needed those two years to get herself together.
