Sorry, but you should have taken better care of your pet. If it could wander out of your garden into someone elses, where else could it have gone? What about into the road?

Yeah, OP, I see how this sucks more for you. If you can't control your pets, the decent move now would be to apologize and pay her the 300 dollars she could've won. It won't cover it, since she has also lost three years worth of work and the opportunity to win a competition, but at least it'll be a nice gesture. She probably already suspects what happened to her flowers, so trying to hide it will only serve to strain your relationship further.

people: this competition might be worth 300, but there are others and some are worth more and some are worth less. Also, she might like gardening and the $300 is a bonus to someone who gets to spend time doing something she enjoys outside and gets to enjoy having a nice garden all year long. It is likely not the case that she heard about the competition and decided to decidate the next 3 years of her life only to that one competition.
