The problem is that the old passport has visas. They would have to pay for all new visas instead of just keeping the old passport.

Looks like the passport just became a pissport!
Spray it down with white (distilled) vinegar... it will balance out the ph level, may not smell great but it won’t smell like “nostrils burning cat urine” that’s for sure!
I've heard if you spray smelly things with vodka it helps. never tried it myself
have you tried rice?
At least if you can´t find your passport around the house, you will be able to smell your way to it.
Fight back my spraying frabreze on it...that might help
