While I think it was stupid of you to leave your furniture outside, I don't think they could/should have taken your stuff. Where I live, at least, we have to call ahead of time and let them know in detail what we are leaving out for them to take. I live in California too (like you) so if I were you I would try calling them and see what exactly happened. Might be your fault, but there's a chance they are the ones at fault. Good luck OP.
That sucks OP, but the donation people should of knocked on the door or something and came back later if you were not there, when I have donated stuff that is what the places I have donated to have done to make sure they are taking the right stuff, I would call them up and tell them the situation and ask for the stuff back that you didnt want to donate.
What if he only has $20 in his pocket?...
To be honest, you kind of deserve it. Anywhere I've ever lived, if something is on someone's curb/outside a building (and there's no moving van/workers in view), it's an implied, "I don't want this but **** if I'm going to pay for the dump fees, someone please make it go away." Not only that, but if you were moving apartments, how long were you planning on being gone to drop stuff off at the new place? Why not rent a truck and do it all in one go, or at least leave your stuff in the old apartment that you're not moving in that go.
Do you have proof that it was the charity? Where I live, if you leave anything on the curb, it's fair game to whoever wants it. I have put stuff out that I didn't think anyone in their right mind would want and it was gone in less than an hour. YDI for leaving stuff out on the curb without having someone watch it. Next time spring $25 for a UHAUL and do it all in one shot.
You left furniture outside and left? What did u expect? Lol

You're moving without help? How could you place your furniture outside, not have a friend watch it and actually expect it to still be there when you return? I think this shoulda been common sense.
Well... At least you donated it to someone who will really need it
