Healthcare scandal

By itsjustnotfair - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, my dentist asked me about my fillings, so I told him that when I was younger, I had 2 cavities. He replied, "No you didn't. I just looked at your x-rays." Turns out my old dentist ripped me off. I never needed fillings. FML

that's malpractice! He could get in serious trouble for that, such as having his license revoked. I would report him. He could potentially hurt someone, not to mention scamming many people, and the healthcare system.

Now I wanna be a dentist when I grow up.

In response to the "dentists are scam artists".. No they actually aren't.. a dentist cannot charge more for a procedure because a patient has insurance. That is illegal. Any dentist that does something like that could get in serious trouble so I seriously doubt they ALL do that... Now, every once in awhile a dentist MAY help out someone who doesnt have insurance by doing the work for free and incurring all costs themselves... its like pro bono work... so anyway, get the facts straight and if you think the dentist is trying to scam you, just go get a second opinion

actually this is very possible.. when i was younger my dentist said i had like 7 cavities.. my parents didn't believe it so they looked at the xray and there were NO CAVITIES.. they woman was just trying to make more money.. my parents were pissed.. she admitted it and got fired.. also turns out other dentist that were at that office were doing the same thing

#102 - are your parents qualified to read x-rays? Do they know how to diagnose cavities by looking at them? Cause I'm pretty sure no one knows what a cavity looks like on an x-ray unless they have a whole course on it. #104 - The x-rays wouldn't show holes because there is no hole after you fill a tooth. It will show a very white area in the spot the dentist had drilled (unless they used a certain white filling that doesn't show up radiopaque on a film, but most of them these days will). Edit - okay it replied to #102 for some reason, meant to post below the last comment.

OK dummies, the reason its fake is because if you had fillings put in, the dentist drilled into your teeth causing holes in the teeth. Therefore, after having the fillings put in, the x-ray would have to show holes in the teeth because the dentist put them there. There would be no way of knowing later on if those holes were caused by cavities or fillings being put in. A dentist couldn't tell you if the fillings were put into real cavities or if the other dentist drilled holes into the teeth putting in fake fillings.

One reason not to get local anesthesia: you can definitely tell the difference between drilling enamel and drilling decayed stuff if your mouth isn't numb. (actually the only reason, unless you're extremely trypanophobic) But I had two dentists in the same office give me different opinions: the newer dentist said I had a cavity, the senior dentist said I just had a crevice that should be filled but not drilled (if I recall correctly). I trusted the senior dentist.

ouch thats sounds painful. but i have to laugh because it reminds me of some old horror movie i saw along time ago called the dentist. i would go back there and kick his ass

That almost happened to me once. I decided to try a new dentist in town after receiving several fliers in the mail. She told me that her "cavity detecting machine" was extremely accurate and that the two times it beeped as she swiped it across my teeth meant I DEFINITELY needed fillings in those two places. I then got a second opinion at my family's regular dentist, who did X-rays and told me there wasn't a cavity in sight and that my teeth were in near-perfect health. Shitheads trying to pay off the bills, that's what it is. FYL for having to foot their bills.
