On the fence

Today, my estranged father, who is a cop, decided to show up to my 17th birthday party. He immediately began arresting people for underage drinking. Way to mend fences, dad. FML

Obviously we don't know the backstory behind his estrangement, but YDI for thinking he wasn't going to do his JOB and uphold the law. I know you think he's just being a dick or trying to purposely ruin your day or whatever, but you don't realize the consequences. If something was to happen, god forbid, to someone at the party who had been drinking, who do you think is held responsible by the law?

YDI. Reasons have been listed by others many times. You and your friends shouldnt drink underage. Hes a father and cop. Hes doing the right thing

He's just doing his job! Really, it's just plain stupid to drink or serve alcohol to minors in the first place. YDI for breaking the law! Not your dads fault.

Looks like dad mends fences with iron bars.

You nor your friends shouldn't be drinking underage. Even if your dad was a cop or not. YDI

When did everyone suddenly become prim and proper... Can bet most people have drunk underage. Its not exactly uncommon.

You are absolutely right, most of us on here, including myself, have had alcohol underage. Contrary to this post though, a minor, or a minor's parents, should NOT be serving ANY minors alcohol. If something were to happen to one of those partygoers, it is entirely on the parents, since they are responsible for their child, so long as said child is not 18. Moral of the story, you don't serve minors alcohol at a random party.

Just out of curiosity, who bought the alcohol....one of your friends, or your mom?

Also, I find it no surprise that the only one's to click Fml or give thumbs down to sensible comments are the underage kids who frequent these posts....way to go kids! (*sarcasm)

I'm an underage kid now? I see... Congrats for having the secret special ability to see who votes for what.

I must say, sometimes I am astonished by the comments on this site... Might be because I'm not from the US and have grown up differently but what the **** is up with you sometimes? "today I had sex" "oh my god, YDI because you had sex at your parent's house!!!111" "today I was drinking with some friends" "oh my god, YDI because you shouldn't be drinking when you're underage!!!111!!" Of course, sometimes, OPs do deserve it but every so often I'm getting the impression that everyone on here is some super catholic saint who's never done anything slightly out of the limit... Yes, these kids here were drinking underage. But we don't know the circumstances and you shouldn't be so fast to judge. Nowhere does it say that everyone was getting shitfaced and throwing furniture around. Might as well have been a few beers while the mum was in another room watching tv in case of an emergency. As far as I'm concerned it's pretty ******* normal for teens to test their limits (and you can't tell me that everyone single one of you drank their first beer at 18/21) and I'd rather have my child try around a bit with light alcoholics while I'm there to watch than have them get drunk out of their mind in secret (or the time they become of age and wish to catch up on everything they've "missed out on"). I know people who started drinking (or smoking for that matter) at 11, 15 or even 18, in secret or with their parent's knowledge, and with a little sense of responsibility and guidance they all turned out pretty fine in the end. Yes, there are cases of extreme alcoholism at a young age but forbidding it won't really do much if the child has issues of some other kind e.g low self-esteem which need to be adressed rather than the alcohol. I for myself started drinking at 15 and my mom knew where I was and would pick me up and because she raised me to be confident and responsible I could have my little rebel phase without endagering myself too much. And yes, I was a good student and am now attending university. Actually I don't drink much anymore because I could test my own limit at a younger age and now at a time when it's important to stay healthy and organized I don't have a need to drink much anymore. Sorry for the long rant, but please for the sake of it, stop being to damn judgemental -.-

What kind of idiot participates in underage drinking, especially when there is a police officer around? Oh, that's right, it was you and your guests.

They weren't expecting Op's ESTRANGED father to be there, idiot.
