On the fence

Today, my estranged father, who is a cop, decided to show up to my 17th birthday party. He immediately began arresting people for underage drinking. Way to mend fences, dad. FML

Obviously you shouldn't be drinking if your underage, especially if your dads a cop. You should know better

I love how self-righteous everyone's being despite the fact that almost EVERYONE drinks before the legal age. Stop being so hypocritical. Besides, 18 is the drinking age in NZ so the OP is only a year under. Would you all freak out if a 20 year-old drank in the US? Of course not.

Actually not everyone does. Some have a healthy respect for the law. In Norway the age of drinking is 18, and in Nederland, where I spent a year, it was 16. I'm well above both those ages, and still, never drank alcohol.

Refraining from doing something legal is not showing respect for the law. There's no law that you're respecting. Fair enough if you don't wish to drink, but it doesn't make you some sort of super law-abiding hero.

88 - New Zealand? I thought OP was from Australia? Either way, the drinking age is indeed 18.

Pretty sure the expression is to mend bridges...

good your 17 you shouldn't be drinking anyways

Pretty much YDI. You did something you knew was illegal and now you're complaining about the repercussions for said illegal act.

Never never never have underage drinking at a party..this is what will happen...

When planning something illegal, the first thing one should ask himself: "Is it worth what would happen if I got caught?" The second question is, "How badly and in what possible ways can this go wrong?"

Come on people, most of you were already drinking when you were 17. I only knew one guy who didn't drink at parties at that age. FYL OP

Not that I really count since I'm only one person, but I'm 17 and I don't drink.

Uh drinking is way more fun when you're underage, what's wrong with you all? If you didn't drink when you were underage your life really sucks, you missed out. Only time you can get away with it without a hangover.

Some teens don't actually need alcohol to have fun AND also have a respect for the law.

you sound really cool, what do you do? shop?

And you sound really shallow for thinking that someone's life sucks just because they don't drink. You also sound like someone who gave into a lot of peer pressure. In case you weren't aware, there is actually a world beyond alcohol.

Straight out of the legal for Queensland.... 156A Irresponsible supply of liquor to a minor at a private place etc. (1) An adult must not supply liquor to a minor at a private place, unless the adult is a responsible adult for the minor. Maximum penalty—80 penalty units. (2) A responsible adult for a minor must not supply liquor to the minor at a private place, unless the supply is consistent with the responsible supervision of the minor. Maximum penalty—80 penalty units. (3) For subsection (2), in considering whether the supply is consistent with the responsible supervision of the minor, relevant factors include the following— (a) whether the adult is unduly intoxicated; (b) whether the minor is unduly intoxicated; (c) the age of the minor; (d) whether the minor is consuming the liquor supplied with food; (e) whether the adult is responsibly supervising the minor’s consumption of the liquor supplied; (f) the quantity of liquor supplied and the period over which it was supplied. ---------- The only time people should be getting arrested (in the situation OP presented) would be if they were out on public property while in possession of alcohol. If OP's estranged father had entered the dwelling and starting arresting people - even if the above conditions were met, that is completely different and no way correct enforcement of the laws, he was just being a ****.

So much stupid continuing in this FML. Nothing the OP did was illegal unless they were on public property or the 'responsible adult' was absent or intoxicated. Either way, just being under 18 does not automatically put OP in the wrong which way too many people can't seem to comprehend.

You fail. Your father was doing his job. He may not have been on duty, but you should not have been drinking underage. I realize that in some states it is legal if you're "supervised" but why the hell couldn't you wait 4 years to turn 21? I'm almost 20 and I've never consumed so much as a sip of alcohol. You, OP, are in the wrong.

OP is actually in Australia and the legal age there is 18. But I still agree with your point.

If OP and their guests are being appropriately supervised, and not being allowed to get too intoxicated, then the law has not been broken. Sounds to me like a power hungry jerk jumping on an opportunity to get at his ex.
