Today, I realized that a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering does not offer enough knowledge and experience to accomplish some simple, everyday tasks. I have spent the last 12 years designing large robots to scour the seabed for shipwrecks yet the mechanism used to unhook a bra eludes me. FML

Inspiration for a new robot to design maybe?

Honestly it sucks for you. You failed your sophmore year.

Haha ohhhh memories. When a guy first did that to me (he had never done it either) he kept yanking the back like they were kept together by snaps. I laughed so hard but I was nice enough to let him have a look at the back to study the mechanics.

thumb on one side of the clasp, index finger on the other, then make a quick but gentle (so as to avoid breaking the damn thing) snapping motion. works every time. Unless she has one of those stupid space age things that clasp in the front, then you're screwed.

WHY IS THIS HOOK SO DAMN HARD!!??!

Dude, most of my friends who did engineering only knew about bras by hearsay. They did, however, have a remarkable grasp of the Newton's Laws of Mechanics, the works of Douglas Adams, and the Cure. Of course this was in the early 90s when the programme was 97% male (it's closer to 50-50 now) The trick is to reach under her left arm with your right, use your thumb to hold the left strap in place against her back and stroke the right strap inwards with your index and ring finger until it pops out.

yes it is closer, about 4% closer in my course!

A real man would simply cut the strap. When it comes time to put it back on: duct tape. /sarcasm But seriously it's a lot easier if you look over the the girl's shoulder at what you're doing, especially if you're a visual learner (and if you're an engineer, you probably are).

My husband and I met as teenagers, and the first time he unhooked my bra, he was so smooth. Apprantly it was just beginner's luck. We dated for one year and have been married for two, and he's never managed it that well since. So don't feel bad

I got worried for a second because this is my boyfriend's future career. But then I remembered he likes to do it one-handed, through my shirt, in a public place. XP

Well, yeah, I mean we all like to do that.

Haha, my boyfriend has only gotten it without a struggle once. It think it's so cute, him trying to figure it out. of course, when it took too long I would do it myself, but I let him sweat it out first :P. how's he going to learn if I just do it all the time? I considered challenging him once with a front clasp, but decided not to. Good thing, because that one he couldn't get while we were just standing still and re-dressing. Oh, men. OP, I have faith in you. Practice!

That was a ridiculous reply. GabriLee was saying that it was cute when a guy isn't a pro at it, not that he is lame or not living up to her expectations. Reading comprehension is really cool, you should try it out sometime. And quit being so bitter.

Adorable! I can't say YDI but I hardly think your life is F***ed. I still like this entry. :)
