Today, I heard my sister gagging in her room. She was doing it quietly, and I got pretty concerned, after hearing a lot about bulimia recently. I knocked, then heard a gasp, so I let myself in, only to see her on her knees and her boyfriend with his underwear around his ankles. FML

Today, I woke up to a blood-curdling scream from the bathroom. I jumped out of bed in panic and rushed into the bathroom, only to see my sister limping around in the nude. She'd just jumped out of the shower because someone had flushed the toilet downstairs. FML

Today, I worked up the courage to confess my bulimia to my girlfriend of three months. It's a touchy subject for me and I ended up in tears. When I was done talking, I looked up to see my girlfriend's disgusted face. She claimed I had a 'vomit fetish', said I was 'half a man' and broke up with me. FML

Today, I was trying to go to sleep when I heard my sister come home from the bar. I fell asleep and woke up an hour later to see my sister squatting in my dresser drawer. I asked her what she was doing and she said "I'm peeing." FML

Today, while at a family get together, my bowels suddenly decided they needed to be emptied. Straight away. I felt bad enough using someone else's bathroom for this, but later, my sister came in and loudly said "God, Brian, what the hell have you been eating?" in front of everyone at the get together. FML

You heard a gasp, so you let yourself in. What was the point of knocking if you weren't going to make sure she was okay with you coming in before you did so? But I'm guilty of doing that, so I clicked both of them.

Yes be he did clearly state that he thought it was because she was making herself throw up (bulimia). So it would have been better to knock, wait till she opens the door, then check if she was throwing up. what's the point of knocking if he was gonna hear a gasp and open the door. If someone hears a gasp after a knock it's an "I wasn't expecting it" therefore she could have been changing or something, which would have still ended badly if he opened the door. He should have waited.

I'm pretty sure that a knock on the door is meant to be a request for entry or if it is given as a warning, there is meant to be a gap between knocking and entering. You did it yourself for essentially just barging in.

Not really. OP said she went in because she heard a gasp, which happened after she knocked. Perhaps if the sister hadn't gasped OP would've waited for a response or called out or something?

I agree with 19, I think OP was intending to wait till she said to come in, hence the knock, but then heard her gasp and for some reason thought she was in trouble. I give OP a lot of credit for caring and being willing to try and help.

I don't agree with that at all. This wasn't a life threatening situation even if she was being bulimic. I can't understand why everyone is all oh, aww, he's so concerned for his sister. He may be concerned for her health, but obviously not for her privacy. He should have waited for a response - end of story (especially if he knew her boyfriend was over). YDI, OP and **** your sister's life!

I think they do. But because he knocked and right when he heard a gasp entered he wasn't respecting her privacy, she could have been changing and didn't expect a knock to which she gasped. If he would have respected it he would have waited till she replied or went to the door and then checked if she had made herself throw up

Yes, 188, I mean "immediately." I know bulimia is serious and can cause death eventually but this situation was not life-threatening even if OP's sister was throwing up (which also seems implausible unless she had a bathroom attached to her room). And remember, he was only speculating because of hearing about it recently. This was something that could have been brought up at a later time or, just maybe, OP could have waited for his sister to allow him into her room instead of just barging in! I feel more sorry for the sister having her privacy invaded like that because of a slightly paranoid brother.
