While I feel sorry for the puppy and am sad about that, it's also not totally your fault. Your roommate should have told you or asked you if they could get a puppy; therefore you would know what it was. Common courtesy to talk to your roommate about getting a pet. I feel that even though you were scared, you shouldn't have kicked, since you didn't know what it was. It obviously was too small to be a robber or anything else dangerous to you.
