Today, after taking my clothes out of the washer, I noticed at the very bottom of the washer my boyfriend's USB stick I found a couple of days ago. The USB stick contains his English essay, and his novel he has been working on for almost six months. FML

You can just dry it off in the sun... don't use it for about a week so that it dries thoroughly, then it should work just fine. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, it should still work once it dries out (flash memory=no moving parts). Should be a lesson to your boyfriend, too—clean out your own damn pockets!

Have you ever heard of checking pockets before doing your laundry?

Try to put it into alcohol (vodka will do) and then let it dry. This might help, also clean its contacts with alcohol.

One of the first things we learn in computer classes: Data does not exist unless it exists in two places. Or more.

Well if it was in his pants that you were washing it's his fault for A) not empyting his pockets first and B) not having a backup.

1.) He should have a backup 2.) You shouldn't be doing his laundry

dry it out in a bag of rice and then freeze dry it. it'll probably work without doing all this too.

I ran my USB thumb drive through the washer AND dryer about a month ago and it survived the trip just fine. That's the beauty of a solid state media when there's no power running through it. Just make sure it's good and dry before you try to plug it into anything.
