Today, as a support worker, I spent 45 minutes making various attempts to calm a violent autistic kid. Just as soon as I was sure the crisis was over, he beat me as hard as he could with the "Things I Can Do When I'm Mad" book I'd given him. FML

How unfortunate. That, and a tad bit ironic. Perhaps he gave the book a good use after all.

Shoulda given him the book "how to make sweet passionate love to a woman".

Well at least he's using the book :)

Any wonder he hit you with it, those books are lame as hell.

Good for you for doing the job you do! But as a professional in the field, it's really important to get your labels right. As others have mentioned, the correct way to refer to someone with a disability (or mental illness) is to put the person first and then the disability. This is because they are a person like everyone else and while they have a disability, it shouldn't be the only thing that defines them. So in your case, you would write "child with autism." This is common practice among professionals in Ontario.

As an autistic person with an autistic brother and some autistic friends, I can vouch that many autistic people don't give a shit whether you call them autistic people or people with autism.

Let's be realistic here.. As an adult would you go read that book for tips while you're angry? No... Why expect the same for kids? Not saying you deserved to be hit but come on now come up with better ways!
