Today, as a support worker, I spent 45 minutes making various attempts to calm a violent autistic kid. Just as soon as I was sure the crisis was over, he beat me as hard as he could with the "Things I Can Do When I'm Mad" book I'd given him. FML

Today, I saw a kid throwing a tantrum in a supermarket. Thinking it was a matter of lack of discipline, I waited for the kid’s mother to come out of the bathroom to tell her how naughty her son was being. I then got to watch her beat her son to the point of unconsciousness. FML

Today, my father-in law-shared his opinion that autistic kids should be beaten until they act normal. He saw fit to share this while my autistic son was having a meltdown because my father-in-law came to the house without warning, and my son violently hates visitors without prior warning. FML

You'd be surprised at the difference between "can't help it" and "not knowing any better". Likely this kid knows what he does is wrong, but legitimately can't help it. That still doesn't make such violence against the OP alright, mind.

Actually, he might not realize it's wrong. My little brother is severely autistic and doesn't really understand that hitting and kicking is wrong. He knows he gets in trouble, but who's to say he understands that it's wrong?
