Today, I asked my boss for a few days off next week, because my grandmother passed away yesterday and I'll need to travel to attend the funeral. His response: "She's dead, you're not. You want time off, then quit." FML

Sorry for your loss, OP. And an insensitive boss like that is a horrible one. I wish you and your family the best.

he will get his own soon enough. sorry for your loss.

You can't collect unemployment for being fired, only if you're laid off. But most companies have a policy about bereavement. Check if yours does and get his ass reported for OSHA violations.

If your boss is not violating a policy by preventing you from going, you don't want to work for that company anyways. Go to the funeral, spend time with family and work on making a good resume. Good luck.

Actually there's a law that allows employees to be off work for a week if a relative passed away.

First of all, sorry to hear about your loss. Second, that was mighty insensitive of your boss. Take vacation time if you must, but don't miss out on the chance to say your final goodbyes.

You should talk to a therapist, then talk to HR or the local Business Bureau about how experience effected you mentally and emotionally, so much that you had to go see a therapist

Brilliant, op can use that to get a lawyer too.

Try and arrange for someone to cover for you, and sort out everything your boss will have to do. Go to someone higher than your boss and explain what happened, as most places allow you to have time off for a funeral. My work allowed me to have a week off to go to Malta with a day's notice so hopefully someone else is nicer.

Sounds like something my boss would say. I'll wish liver disease on him on your behalf.
