Today, I asked my boss for a few days off next week, because my grandmother passed away yesterday and I'll need to travel to attend the funeral. His response: "She's dead, you're not. You want time off, then quit." FML

Sorry for your loss, OP. And an insensitive boss like that is a horrible one. I wish you and your family the best.

What an ass your boss is! If I were you I would quit. You can always get another job but you may regret not going to the funeral. Good luck in making your decision.

I hope you punched him in the face. What filth.

Speaking from experience i'd say quit your job because saying goodbye to a grandparent only comes around once. You don't want that on your conscious for a shitty boss. Jobs come and go but loved ones are forever.

Almost everyone has 4 grandparents, unless one or more of them died before they were born, or one of them got remarried, so you have 4 chances to say goodbye to a grandparent, one for each one.

Sorry for your loss OP, if I were you I would quit, you shouldn't have to deal with an asshole of a boss who is stopping you from saying your final goodbyes, good luck OP.

I think it is inhumane not to grant OP leave, but what is unnacceptable are the comments he made. Read your Company policy and ask H R and senior management to intervene. Also urgently find a new job

Go see your family. Maybe he doesn't believe you, but if you show a funeral announcement in the paper he will and won't be such a douche. I wouldn't work for him if I didn't have to. I can't tell you quite because I don't know your situation, but get out if you can.

Actually it depends on your state. And in some states the reason you're fired. i didn't see where OP lives, but I think he definitely could have a case.
