Today, I finally decided to get a dog. I have always been wanting to get one ever since I was a child. I bought a $1,400 Golden Retriever. I went out for lunch a few hours later with a friend, so I left my dog in the backyard. I came back home to a broken fence and no dog. FML

Why didn't you tie it up? If it was a new pet, you don't know how it's going to react. YDI for not making sure it was secure!

dont have kids, please you cant even take care of a dog...

WTF is wrong with you? You take a dog to a new environment, leave him with no companionship, and expect him to sit still like a good little boy? I'd jump the fence too if I had you for an owner. And it serves you right for spending that much money on a dog when there are thousands of FREE dogs dying in shelters because no one is willing to save them. Haven't you seen the Sarah McLaughlin commercials? YDI. Definitely.

YDI, you don't leave dogs outside asshole.

Oh, you so deserve that one! There are so many abandoned dogs on the streets and shelters and you gave more than most people earn in a month for a stupid pedigree dog that is no more that a sack of genetic diseases. Like this wasn't enough you just abandoned your $1,400 in your backyard like it was an object. You so deserved it. Go buy another one, let the dogs die in the shelters. I hate people like you. I am a veterinarian.

you guys are stupid, all of you. Yes, leaving the new dog alone for a couple of hours was a bad idea, and he could have adopted one. but honestly if I were to buy a dog, i would probably leave it outside if I had to go out because it's better than leaving it in the house, at least it can run around outside. It's not like he bought it and left for a week, it was a couple of hours. you can't bring a dog with you everywhere. besides most dogs from a breeder (assuming that's where he got it), wouldn't try to escape.

What do you mean most dogs from a breeder wouldn't try to escape? They get lonely and nervous just like any other dog.

YDI for the following reasons; 1. You just got a dog and you leave it alone! 2. You spend 1400 dollars on a dog, a golden retriever of all races! I know the dollar is hardly worth anything these days but damn thats overpriced! 3. You leave it alone, OUTSIDE. Dogs can jump, they can dig and they can even climb or something (I got no idea how on of our dogs gets ontop of some things, maybe magic :O). Atleast wait with those things till the dog is used to its surrounding and to you. oh and #25, its not about where the dogs came from, its about the nature of the dog (wether it wants to escape (and chase cows or whatever))

Why the hell would you spend that much on a dog?

Haven't you ever heard of The Pound?? Rescuing an animal, instead of paying that insane amount of money? You pay that much on a dog and you don't even treat it right...

Jesus Christ people, Anon wanted a pure-bred puppy, and obviously had the money to get it. I personally only get shelter animals, but no reason to attack someone who goes to a breeder instead.

THANK YOU! Yes, the owner was stupid for not properly tying up the dog or leaving it in the house where it couldn't escape. But all of these people who are condemning the OP for buying a dog (that particular one was overpriced, btw) are idiots. YES there are dogs in shelters that need homes, but that doesn't mean that the puppies at stores and such don't need homes as well. What do you think happens to those purebred puppies if they don't get bought, huh? It doesn't matter where the dog came from as long as it's going into a good home. I have 2 purebred dogs, though I didn't pay as much for both together as the OP did for her one, and they're just as friendly and loving as the shelter dogs I own. Neither of the store bought dogs had any diseases, they're both intelligent enough for their breed, and they get along just fine with the other dogs.

The problem with dogs from pet stores isn't always that they have health problems or are poorly bred... that's just the problems that can actually affect YOU. I'm sure you do have "perfectly good" pet store dogs. However, when you buy that cute little puppy that "needs a home", you make space for another one at that pet store. It will come from another awful puppymill, where dogs are treated like commodities, kept in small cages, and given only enough care to continue to reproduce. Those who support these places will argue that there are exceptions and that you only see the bad examples, but think about the situation rationally: when you go into a pet store you see 20-30 puppies of various breeds, all at the same age (always around 8 weeks). This alone tells you that these pups are being churned out at an incredibly fast rate... something that simply cannot be done if you are giving the breeding pair and their pups the love and care that they deserve. MORAL: Do NOT buy pet store puppies. You are not doing anyone any favors. You are simply putting money in the pockets of very bad people and allowing them to keep abusing animals. That being said, at that price tag, it is also possible that OP got the dog from a respectable breeder. However, a $1400 golden would likely be of show quality, as even show breeders will sell their pet-quality pups at a lower price. Since this is the OP's first dog, I'm going to say they probably didn't plan to show it. Soooo... YDI for either thinking that you needed a show-quality dog for a first-time pet or for supporting puppymills. Also noticed... the OP said "dog" not "puppy"... and the fence was broken, so it was either a stolen pup or an escaped dog... If you did actually spend $1400 on an adult dog, that thing had better be trained to like wait tables and bring home the tips or something.

I agree with #25, I would have left my dog outside if I had to go out.. We got our Golden from the pound and he is the best dog ever. Unfortunatley, he was abused and doesn't like being outside. But he stays out there with our Rotty so at least he isn't lonely ^_^ Also, how old was the dog, that you had to get it for $1400? Was he/she at least papered?

Yes, it was a dumb move to leave the dog alone right away. But that doesn't mean it still doesn't really suck. Losing a pet is horrible, regardless of what you pay for it. I feel awful for the OP. I hope the dog is okay.
