Today, I found a note on the front door of my flat saying, "You left your keys in your garage door so I put them in your letter box". Guess where my letter box key is. FML

They used the same key on your ring to get into the "letter box". Which means the keys are in there so it can't be locked. Easy just open your "letter box" and get them out. Duh.

Maybe the letterbox locks automatically when it closes? Does it do that? I don't know, because I've never had one.

I say you need to invest in a copy of the key, which is to stay at home in a safe place. So, if this ever happens to you again, you'll be able to open your mailbox..
