Today, I got a letter back from the family I will be staying with as a part of an exchange program. Apparently they own a slaughterhouse type farm, and I'm expected to kill one of their animals and eat it as a gift from the family. I'm a vegan. FML

Woah! At least they didn't threaten to kill you in the slaughter house! For a second I thought that's where the FML was going!

You'd have to know the basics of a family to stay with them in an exchange program. The idea of the whole exchange program is to see what life is like in an environment that's different that yours. If you're vegan, why would you agree to stay with a family that owns a slaughterhouse farm? YDI.

kill and eat them inatead, works for me

What is the point of being an exchange student if you refuse to partake in the culture fully? It isn't a fetus you're killing.

Guys , enough of the vegan bashing, I am a butcher and I can respect OP's choice, having said that it is in some cultures a mark of great respect to be allowed to cull an animal for a celebatory feast. OP, you need to be prepared to perform this act so as not to offend, or as previously stated, find a more siutable family.

well you should hve thought bout tht b4 becoming a vegan

ummm, why would you go to another country if you're such a picky prick that you won't even eat meat? personal views aside, in the real world people eat meat so they don't die. maybe you've been blessed with diversity enough that you haven't had to, but it's also turned you into an ungrateful brat. people like you give a bad name to Americans around the world
