Maybe it has something to do with your attitude, and the fact that you insist you were "friend zoned"; maybe the girls haut weren't interested in your childish self. Maybe.

If one has Romatic feelings for the other the Friendship part is usually over because those feelings dont vanish just by hearing "i want to be friends not lovers" In my opinion best way to react in such a situation is either Break contact until said Friend is romantically involved somewhere else or you have to make it really really clear that there will never be more than Friendship. Otherwise there will always be that tiny spark of hope that the Friend will change his stance on that subject. And thats what defines the Friendzone for me. One of the two trying/pretending to be a Friend even though the one has Romatic feelings for the other and hoping that one day mabye the other one changes his mind. The other way to get into that kind of situation is having feelings for someone but not telling them those feelings in hopes that the other one magically falls in love with the other one. Reason for this is bad unclear communication on both parts. As to the FML, that wasnt friendzoning. Just rejection.
