Unless he zeroed the drive you can get it back. Wil be very expensive though.
And... Being a photographer you didn't have it backed up at least two different places?

Its still recoverable
Don't use the drive. Download Recuva(it's free) and you should be able to recover the majority of the files. The more you've used it since it was wiped, the less you're getting back. Source: I work in IT, I do it all the time.
Any photographer with half a brain backs up their work.
I accidentally read that as "Pornography," which would be equally devastating.
This is my worst nightmare... Glad I have a 2 terabyte external hard drive :)

This is why you have an external hard drive to save these important things onto when you are letting someone unqualified (I'm guessing) mess with your stuff.
