Today, I ordered take out, and paid with a credit card. The cute cashier gave me the receipt to sign, and under 'tip' I gave a couple of dollars. I realized that I had given too much, crossed it out, and changed it. Unaware she was watching, She then responded, "Did you just lower the tip by $1?" FML

What does it matter if she saw you do it or not? She would have seen it crossed out in a little bit anyway. It's a weird thing that you would bother to cross it out and lower it by only a dollar, seeing as how a dollar is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it's just weird as opposed to horrible. Plus, it was only take out, people don't normally tip on take out at all so if I were her, I'd feel grateful to have even gotten a couple dollars.

I think what he means is that he wants the waiter to make the night good by providing good service and that they should have to work for a big tip and not just expect it

I agree with #11. She shouldn't have been watching at all, then she commented on it? I would have turned, looked at her, said something rude, and crossed out the tip all together. But you are a cheapass. Unless you were planning on giving that dollar to a homeless guy....

#9 Nope. I don't understand how this is an FML at all. Also - you took back a DOLLAR? Seriously? A dollar mattered enough to you that you took the time to cross it out and lower the tip? If your money situation is that bad, what are you doing ordering take out?

Not a big deal, but I understand why you reduced it. This was a TAKE-OUT order people. I do not tip at all for take-out. Sorry, you're not doing a service. I don't tip the cashier at the grocery store or the movie theater either.

they are doing you a service, you are a dumbass. please only eat at mcdonalds for now on until you realize the idiocy of your ways.

If it's busy, take out orders can be the hardest part. You have to open each box and make sure it's right, label each box, keep it warm if the person who placed it isn't there to get it, AND keep an eye out for them at the door. While trying to take care of all of your other tables. On the flip side of that, if it isn't busy and you're up next in the rotation and you get a to go order, you get screwed. Most waitresses/waiters make 2.13 an hour, at last where I'm from. If you get skipped on rotation because of a to go order and you don't get at least a couple of dollars, you get screwed over.

that is so cheap of you..I mean COME ON...ONE buck?!?! GEEZ....would u go bunkrupt if u left that $1?

It's understandable if it's takeout but still, if you had written in that extra $1, just keep it there...!

Wow really? For a dollar? She really shouldn't have been watching you but still. I would have said the same thing to you if I saw that.

I actually agree with #3... you shouldn't have to tip big unless they've really put forth effort in making the customers pleased.

She did say she used a credit card maybe she only had a certain amount on it and realized when she put the tip down it was $1 over so still wanting to tip she just lowered it one dollar. And anyway that's unprofessinol. If I was u when she said that I wouldve said ya why did I do that and cross out the tip and put 0 that would have made her shut up.LOL

I would always tip, but on takeout I feel a little different. It is one thing if they waited on you. Not saying that I wouldn't tip at all, but they would not get 20%. and I could see if you took back, say... 5 dollars or what have you, but just one? She needs to keep her mouth shut and would it have really hurt to just leave the one dollar?

My dad was a restaurant manager, and one of my most vivid memories of childhood was watching him chew out a server who looked at a customer writing his tip on a credit card slip. It's different with take-out, because the person who is being tipped is right there, but the least the girl could have done was look away. At any rate, that's unprofessional behavior to the extreme. I would be calling a manager and complaining. But a dollar? Seriously? It's not worth adjusting a tip over -- or commenting on. However, I agree with whomever said that the tip should have been crossed out entirely.

While I agree with you, I think the whole 'its just one dollar' is an opinion. We don't know OP's financial situation or maybe the waitress just didn't do a good job. Anyways I never would tip on takeout. All the server does is give you your bag of food. I tip for delivery or dining in.
