Today, I ordered take out, and paid with a credit card. The cute cashier gave me the receipt to sign, and under 'tip' I gave a couple of dollars. I realized that I had given too much, crossed it out, and changed it. Unaware she was watching, She then responded, "Did you just lower the tip by $1?" FML

What does it matter if she saw you do it or not? She would have seen it crossed out in a little bit anyway. It's a weird thing that you would bother to cross it out and lower it by only a dollar, seeing as how a dollar is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it's just weird as opposed to horrible. Plus, it was only take out, people don't normally tip on take out at all so if I were her, I'd feel grateful to have even gotten a couple dollars.

I think what he means is that he wants the waiter to make the night good by providing good service and that they should have to work for a big tip and not just expect it

# 39, You're 2nd paragraph makes you sound like a douche. If you've worked in a restaurant, then you know how stressful it is waiting on tables and not even making minimum wage to begin with. All waiters and waitresses I know LIVE off their tips. Do you know how much energy it would take to be the most spectacular waiter/waitress you've ever had for everyone? Its impossible. They do their job and have to deal with assholes worse or better than you EVERY DAY. They bring your food, listen to your stories and opinions on shit they don't give a **** about and in the end you will "rarely tip more than 13%?" or if maybe they do something you consider "rude" and are completely oblivious to it because of the stress of their job, all the sudden they don't get anything and a talking to by their manager? And OP, if she was cute obviously you should have left the dollar on there. The only reason for crossing that off would be because you were literally a dollar away from maxing out your credit card, which I doubt was happening in the first place. You're cheap and kinda stupid so YDI

Completely agree with #42. Waitresses do not make minimum wage UNLESS they are tipped. When you go out to eat you need to include that into your budget. Its too bad that I can't go to where other people work, and after they help me out for a hour just decide that they won't get paid. However, I do agree that tipping for take-out isn't the same for in-house service. It depends on the situation.

To #3, you may be somewhat justified in your thinking, but the OP never said the service was bad. And the people who responded immediately to you are more correct anyway. Waiters and waitresses get poor wages, and a lot of people don't tip because they're ignorant and/or assholes (I have a friend who until a year or two ago thought that not tipping was a general rule...and he's an asshole, too). If the service is poor, you simply give a tip lower than 10% to make a statement. I have an uncle who, if he gets poor service, will place a penny on the table while making sure the waitress is watching him do it. Here's a good table to follow: 10% or less - you feel shortchanged by the poor, absentminded service 15% - standard, nothing really great, but nothing bad 20% - great, memorable service 25% - great, memorable, friendly service beyond all logical explanation

Thats cheap!! i work the "togo" part sometimes at the resturant i work at and last night i worked for 4 hours and 3 out of the 4 orders didnt tip! i only make 4 dollars an hour. i walked away with 4 dollars last night...thanks to assholes like you and other cheap people who think a dollar is enough to live off of

I'm always surprised when I go to America by how standard it is to tip, and how open people are about asking for their tip. In Ireland tipping is done because it's good form. In America I feel obliged to tip, because minimum wage isn't enough to live on and waiters etc. are relying on them. I think it's pretty screwed that employers pay so poorly that their employers have to rely on strangers to pay them to do their job. Going back to the topic, I also wouldn't see the need to tip for take-out, but since you were doing it anyway, taking back a dollar? Really?

since its only a dollar, I don't think it matters either way.

... most take-out orders are prepared by the hostess/cashier, and they actually DO make minimum wage, so you actually shouldn't feel obligated to tip them though it would be a nice gesture. However... crossing out what you wrote and decreasing it by $1 is sort of a dick thing to do.

45... you worked for 4 hours for $4 per hour and only walked away with $4? Don't you mean $16?

A better ending would have been a brutal beating for being a dick.
